CNC Machined Aluminum Parts with Custom Anodizing and Surface Finishing

For this project, the customer needed a batch of CNC machined aluminum parts with different structures, surface finishes, and anodized colors. The parts included structural brackets, enclosure components, round covers, tubes, plates, rings, and matching accessory parts.

The key requirement was not only to machine each part accurately, but also to keep the surface quality consistent after anodizing. These parts were used for prototype validation, product assembly testing, and small-batch production preparation.


Project Overview

This project covered several types of CNC machined aluminum components, including structural parts, enclosure housings, round caps, thin plates, tubular parts, and small assembly accessories.

The parts required different surface treatments, including natural machined aluminum, black anodizing, and multi-color anodizing. The anodized colors included black, red, green, blue, purple, gold, and other custom colors.

The silver part shows the original CNC-machined aluminum surface, while the black part shows the final anodized finish. This comparison is useful for understanding how the same geometry can look very different after surface treatment.

For product developers, this kind of comparison is important during the prototype stage. Sometimes the first part is used to verify geometry and assembly, while the final version needs anodizing or other surface finishing for appearance and durability.


Manufacturing Process

The parts were produced mainly by CNC milling and CNC turning. For the structural components, the main focus was accurate hole positions, clean pocket machining, stable wall thickness, and smooth edge transitions.

Some parts had deep pockets, curved ribs, thin walls, threaded holes, and multiple mounting interfaces. These features required proper machining sequence and toolpath planning to reduce deformation and keep the dimensions stable.

This batch of metal structural parts shows the repeatability of CNC machining. Even when the geometry is complex, the hole positions, cylindrical features, ribs, and mounting areas need to remain consistent across the batch.

For small-batch production, consistency is often more important than making just one good sample. The customer needs each part to fit, assemble, and perform in the same way.


Surface Finishing

After machining, the parts were deburred, cleaned, and prepared for surface treatment. Different parts used different finishing methods based on their function and appearance requirements.

For the natural aluminum parts, the machining marks were kept clean and controlled. For the black and colored parts, anodizing was used to improve appearance, surface protection, and corrosion resistance.

Color anodizing requires stable surface preparation. If the surface has scratches, uneven sanding marks, or inconsistent blasting, these defects can become more visible after anodizing.

That is why surface handling before anodizing is very important. Even when the dimensions are correct, poor surface preparation can make the final part look inconsistent or low quality.


Key Challenges

One challenge in this project was the variety of parts. The batch included large structural components, small rings, round covers, tubes, plates, and enclosure parts. Each type of part required a different machining and finishing strategy.

Another challenge was maintaining surface consistency after anodizing. Different geometries absorb and reflect light differently, so surface texture, color depth, and edge quality needed to be controlled carefully.

For the black structural part, the deep pockets and internal surfaces needed clean finishing. For the multi-color enclosure parts, the appearance had to be consistent enough for product display, assembly testing, and customer review.


Final Result

The final parts were delivered with clean CNC-machined surfaces, accurate assembly features, and consistent anodized finishes.

This project demonstrates how CNC machining and surface finishing can be combined for functional prototypes, product development parts, and low-volume production.

It is a good example of a project where the customer needed more than simple machining. The job required material selection, machining strategy, surface preparation, anodizing control, and small-batch consistency.
